Through His Son

compiled by Rachel Cory-Kuehl, October 2017

Edited: September 1, 2022

Scripture quoted from the NKJV, unless otherwise noted.

Most Christian believers know that Jesus died on a cross “for us.” But they do not know much about all the other things that God’s Son has done, and will do, for His Father and for those who come to the Father, through Him. I wanted to pull together passages which describe different aspects of His very active role.

He was more then just the “Lamb.” He is “the Word” of God, and the “right arm” of the LORD. He holds the keys of life and death. He created this world and He will judge this world. He will execute judgment, and He will resurrect the righteous. He will create a new heavens and a new earth. He is more than the sacrificial Lamb. He is “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

GOD CREATED ALL THINGS - THROUGH HIS SON

John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him; and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Colossians 1:15-17 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”

I Corinthians 8:6 “yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.”

Hebrews 1:1-2God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.”

GOD HAS SPOKEN TO MEN - THROUGH HIS SON

The Son of God is called “The Word.”

John 1:4 “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.”

John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’”

John 1:18 “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”

God’s Son has declared His Father. He has revealed Him - to us.

John 12:49 “For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.”

1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

The study titled “The Mediator” follows the Son of God through the Old Testament.

GOD SAVES - THROUGH HIS SON

The Father draws us to be reconciled with Himself. He sent His Son for this purpose.

2Corinthians 5:19God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.”

1 John 4:14 “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.”

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’”

Galatians 1:4-5 [Christ] “who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever.”

2 Timothy 1:8-9 “Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began . . .”

God the Father always knew that Adam and his descendants would sin against Him. He knew that Lucifer would rebel, and one third of the angels. He beget His only Son, before the creation of this universe, and before the creation of angels, to effect a future reconciliation for those who would be willing. God knew that only His death - visibly, within the physical dimension, could send a message of love clear enough to be heard and understood by human beings. He could not die, while He continued to uphold all things by His power. So He beget a Son, His double - exactly like Himself. Then He sent that Son with the message of His love.

Philippians 4:7 “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Hebrews 13:20-21 “Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

The Father raised Christ from death (1Peter 1:3, Galatians 1:1)

and the Father works His will - in us - through Christ.

GOD POURS LOVE AND BLESSINGS - THROUGH HIS SON

Romans 8:39 “Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (NIV)

Ephesians 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with     every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.

GOD WILL JUDGE - THROUGH HIS SON

John 5:22 “For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son.”

NOTE: The Son has not taken on this task of judgment, of His own will. This task was committed to Him BY His Father. This shows separation and hierarchy.

Acts 17:31 “ ... because He [God the Father] has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

NOTE: Christ did not resurrect Himself from death. His Father raised Him.

Romans 2:16God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

2 Timothy 4:1 “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the     living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:”

Acts 10:42 “And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was     ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead.”

John 8:16 “Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is valid; for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.” (NRS)

Jesus said, “The Father, who dwells in Me, does the works” (John 14:10). He said, “the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me” (John 14:24). The Father is Spirit. He was “in” Christ and “with” Christ, as Spirit. He communicated His will to the mind of Christ. His living power flowed through Christ, to heal, and to judge, as He lived on this earth - a man among men.

John 5:26-27 "For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.”

Matthew 25:31-41When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand,`Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: . . . . Then He will also say to those on the left hand,`Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:’”

GOD FORGIVES - THROUGH HIS SON

Luke 5:24 “‘But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.’ So he said to the paralyzed man, ‘I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.’” (NIV) See also Mark 2:5-12, and Matthew 9:6.

Forgiveness is healing. The Father healed through Christ, to whom He gave authority to forgive sins. Christ received this authority and this life giving power, from His Father, the ultimate authority, and the ultimate source of life. All of creation draws life from the Father. That life is poured out to us, through His Son.

John 5:26 “For as the Father has life in Himself,

so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;”

Acts 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

John 14:10 [Jesus said] “The Father, who dwells in Me, does the works.”

GOD WILL SUBDUE EVIL - THROUGH HIS SON

1 Corinthians 15:24 “Then the end will come, when he [Jesus] hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he [Christ] must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

27 For he [God the Father] ‘has put everything under his feet.’ Now when it says that ‘everything’ has been put under him [Christ], it is clear that this does not include God himself, [the Father] who put everything under Christ.

28 When he [Christ] has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him [God     the Father] who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all. (NIV)

1Corinthians 11:3 [Paul wrote] “. . . the head of Christ is God.”

John 10:29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them from my Father's hand.” (NET)

GOD WILL EXECUTE JUDGMENT – THROUGH HIS SON

John 3:35 [Christ speaking] “The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.”

Revelation 19:15 “Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”

John 14:10 [Jesus speaking] “The Father, who dwells in Me, does the works.”

GOD WILL RESTORE - THROUGH HIS SON

John 6:39 [Christ] “This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.”

Philippians 3:20-21 “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.”

GOD WILL RULE - THROUGH HIS SON

Philippians 2:10-11 “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Psalm 2:7-12 “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me,`You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel. 10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.’”

Revelation 2:26 “‘And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations-- 27 He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels '-- as I also have received from My Father;”

Revelation 19:16 “And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

THE END

1 Corinthians 15:24Then the end will come, when he [Jesus] hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he [Christ] must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

27 For he [God the Father] ‘has put everything under his feet.’ Now when it says that ‘everything’ has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.

28 When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him [God the     Father] who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all. (NIV)

God the Father has given all authority over creation, to His Son. When Christ has completed His mission to defeat every enemy of God, and to reconcile those who are willing, He will then present this Kingdom to His Father as His perfect offering - cleansed and restored. The Son of God will then “be made subject to” God the Father. This is hierarchy!

We cannot say that “God” is three separate, divine, eternally co-equal beings, with a verse like this one. This verse demonstrates clearly that the Father is greater than His Son, in authority and station, and will always be so.

In the everlasting Kingdom, the Son will be subject to His Father, just as He has been from “the beginning.” The Holy City New Jerusalem will descend from Heaven to Earth. God and the Lamb are the Temple of that City.

Revelation 5:13 “And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: "Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!"

TWO divine persons are worshiped here - NOT three. There is no verse commanding or demonstrating worship of the Spirit AS a third divine person.

A SON - IS NOT ABOVE - HIS FATHER

The Father’s will has always been supreme.

      The Father sent His Son.

It was the Father’s will, that Christ should suffer.

The Father raised His Son from death.

The Father has decreed that all should worship His only Son.

The Father is God of Christ (John 20:17, Rom. 15:6, 2Cor. 1:3, 2Cor. 11:31, Eph. 1:3,

             Eph. 1:17, Col. 1:3, Heb. 1:9, 1Pet. 1:3, Rev. 1:6, Rev. 3:12).

Ephesians 4:6 “... one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

John 6:38-39 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.”

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

Matthew 12:50 “For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:35).

Luke 11:2 “So He said to them, ‘When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your     name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’” (Matt. 6:10).

Matthew 26:42 “Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.’”

Luke 22:42 “... saying, Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

John 4:34 “Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me . . .’”

John 5:30 “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.”

Hebrews 10:7 “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come -- In the volume of the book it is written of Me -- To do Your will, O God.’”

John 6:40 “And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Galatians 1:4 “ ... who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age,     according to the will of our God and Father . . .”

The entire first chapter of Ephesians is a praise to God the Father, Who foreordained, and purposed that we would someday be adopted as His sons and daughters, through Christ His son. He planned this before the earth was created. The creation of this earth, and the salvation of those who would accept His Son, was ultimately and originally the will, the idea and the plan of God Our Father.

I believe that God the Father existed before Christ His Son. Why call Jesus “the Son” if He was not - in fact, a “son” at all. I do not believe Christ simply became a son, when He incarnated. I believe that God literally “beget” His Son, from out of Himself, before anything was created. His beginning was THE beginning, of the creation of God (Rev. 3:14). Jesus calls Himself, “the beginning” (Rev. 21:6, 22:13). He is the second divine being - the only divine being ever begotten from God Himself. He was begotten - not created.

We come to God our Father through Jesus the Christ, His only begotten Son.

He is the Word of God, His right hand and His holy arm. He is “the fountain of every blessing,” “the light of the world,” the “bread from Heaven,” “the way, the truth, and the life.”

Psalm 98:1 “Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.”

We pray this study will prove a blessing.
