believe? Do you know why you believe it? What if there is
another explanation that fits perfectly with the Biblical
description and timeline and at the same time explains and fits
with ALL the geological and archeological evidence around us?

![]() Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary focuses its attention on the text of the books of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. Our distance from the thought of the biblical writers and the world in which they lived and wrote is arguably the greatest impediment to understanding these texts. After a brief essay that introduces each book, a verse-by-verse commentary follows. Drawing upon linguistic analysis, archaeological evidence, history, other ancient Near Eastern literatures, and the like, the commentary provides the historical and cultural background against which the texts can be read and understood. Like The Zondervan Encyclopedia of the Bible, the commentary set strives to be both accessible and scholarly. And nearly every page has one or more color illustrations, making it, too, a visually engaging set. Because of ambiguities in the biblical texts, gaps in the historical and cultural record, scholarly differences assessing existing evidence, and differing approaches to textual criticism and historical method, final judgments as to questions of interpretation and meaning are often elusive. This does not mean that scholarly conclusions are not drawn. Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary strives to include these varying viewpoints but is honest and straightforward in stating that the conclusions it presents reflect a critical and theological position that is rooted in historic Christianity and is conservative/evangelical. Recommended for theological collections and research libraries. To buy at Amazon.com. click here |
![]() The author reveals, through 25 years of counseling, that he has determined people communicate love in five basic ways. They are Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Physical Touch and Giving Gifts. For example, if my primary love language is Quality Time, then I will show my love to others by spending quality time with them. If I don't receive that in return, my love tank will be empty. The author stresses the importance of knowing your loved one's love language so that you can communicate love to that person in a way in which he/she feels love, so that their love tank can be continually replenished. If my spous's love language is acts of service and he is always doing things for me to communicate his love, but I receive love through the language of quality time, I will not receive his acts of service as communicating love and therefore my love tank will be dry. I in return, must communicate my love to him through acts of service in order to fill his love tank. An empty love tank causes relationships to deteriorate. This book was excellent for teaching us to recognize the way in which our loved ones receive and feel loved. To buy at Amazon.com, click here. |

A commentary that does not skim over texts, but goes into detail
of each verse (1,400 pages for the two volumes). The two volumes
have been my companion now for several months in my morning
Bible study, and will be for a few months more. Though the detail of Hebrew words is gone into, it is done in such a way that the non-Hebrew-scholar can understand. And the "Theological implications" sections at the end of each portion are a mine of spiritual treasures. Though I am possibly not well placed as a layman to judge, for me it is THE study on Ezechiel to study. |
![]() Are Christianity and science incompatible? If there is a God, is he only an impersonal starter force? An introductory high school biology class first propelled Lee Strobel toward a life of atheism. God and science, he reasoned, were mutually exclusive. When the former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune converted to Christianity, he decided to investigate the science he had once accepted as truth. Did science point toward or away from God? As Strobel interviews a variety of scientists on everything from debunking evolutionary icons to the implications of the Big Bang to the existence of the human soul, he builds his case: scientific evidence points toward Intelligent Design. Although the discussion often veers into the academic, Strobel works hard to make it accessible to those without scientific training. Throughout the book, he salts interview transcript information with interesting personal stories of his own spiritual and scientific quest for knowledge, as well as sometimes over-detailed descriptions of the actual interviews (right down to the type of beverages consumed). Each chapter contains suggestions for further reading on particular issues of science and faith. Strobel concludes that, when correctly interpreted, science and biblical teaching support each other. He quotes physicist Paul Davies, "…science offers a surer path to God than religion." Open-minded readers will find that this book, and its questions for reflection and group study, invites conversation and investigation |
