Know the Enemy

To believe in the Jesus of the New Testament - the Son of God, one must also believe that Satan exists, along with his army of evil fallen angel spirit beings. Satan is mentioned or described over 150 times in the Bible, under many names. Believers understand that humanity is caught up in a war of super spirit powers. We fight on the LORD’s side, or we will be used as pawns or abused playthings, of the Enemy. Or worse, act as enemies of Christ. We understand that those seeking to be used effectively by Christ will come to the attention of “the Enemy,” who will engage in measures to neutralize their witness. Yes - as if a target had been painted on one’s head. We must learn to recognize his attacks, and we must learn how to fight back.
Ephesians 6:12 “For we are not struggling against human beings, but against the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers governing this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm” [the spirit realm]. (CJB)
LIES - LIES - LIES
Most New Covenant believers do NOT understand what demonic oppression or harassment, can feel like. The battle is for the mind. Satan and his evil angels will speak to the mind, with lies and distortions. Let me give you some examples.
constant feelings of inferiority, helplessness, or hopelessness
thoughts of suicide
anxiety or panic attacks, night terrors
depression, unreasonable fears, constant sad thoughts
a voice in your mind telling you that you are a loser,
or you have failed as a wife, a friend, a husband, a dad, or a child of God
a voice in your mind calling you fat, or ugly, or stupid, or lazy,
or unlovable, unforgivable, damaged goods, dirty, or something similar
a voice in the mind saying you are weird and no one will like you, or want to be your friend
a voice saying that you cannot trust your “husband/wife” or your child
a voice prompting you to nag your spouse or your children over and over,
because it’s up to you to see they are saved
a voice that reminds you of past injuries inciting you to resentment, anger or vengeance
a voice suggesting you really want some sin,
which then quickly accuses you if you give in to the urging
a sudden sleepiness or agitation when you try to study your Bible
a distracting voice that reminds you of a dozen things you “should be doing” instead
a voice in your mind that tells you this is way to complicated for you to understand
Satan is not called “the accuser of the brethren” simply because he accuses us before God (Rev. 12:10). Just as often, Satan accuses believers in their minds, causing them to give up. If you “hear a voice” in your mind, which uses the word “you,” then you may be “hearing” thoughts that a demon is speaking to your mind. (“You’re stupid” - for instance.) It feels like you’re just talking to yourself. But you’re not.
Demons also use the word “I,” so don’t discount demonic harassment, if you do not “hear” the word “you.”
If any of this sounds familiar, then you have very probably come under attack. This is WAR! Satan is the original deceiver and abuser. His mission is to cripple your witness, your joy, and if possible, to drag you back into unbelief. He will do anything to silence the witness for the truth.
Remember: Satan is a liar, and the father of lies! (John 8:44)
And yes - demonic attack can cause physical symptoms. Evil angels can and do cause sinking or fainting spells, usually when one is about to study or to write something the demons do not want understood or explained. They can cause mysterious pains in the body as they attempt to keep the person from doing something of importance in the cause of Christ. The battle is for the mind, and is fought in the mind.
Demons can cause visual apparitions (seeing things or creatures or people that are not actually there). They can cause the subject of their attack to smell things, or feel things (like cold sensations, or touch sensations).
There are accounts of fully experienced rape, that “happened” totally in the mind of the victim. (The experience was no less real to the victim.) Accounts of alien abductions, including medical examinations or other physical experiences are describing demonic activity. We know this because some have stopped the “abductions” in the name of Jesus. The “aliens” are actually evil angels in the service of Satan.
PLEASE learn the methods of the enemy. Learn how to use the authority given you “in Christ” to defend yourself! I am reviewing several books which were recommended to me on this topic. I will post the best resources as I find them. And please do send me your recommendations.
It is of vital importance that believers learn their true identity “in Christ.” See Dr Anderson’s book, “WHO I AM IN CHRIST.” Without this understanding, the believer cannot put on “the whole armour of God” (Ephesians 6:11).
THE GREAT DECEIVER
Satan deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden. He will push any lie that will advance his power, or cause pain to human beings. His lies have caused religious wars and race hatreds for thousands of years. In the last days, His deceptions concerning the fulfillment of Bible prophecies will result in the persecution of “those who keep the commandments of God.” “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24 NIV). It is not enough to know the Bible, for Satan can twist even the Word of God to deceive. It is essential that one pray for the guidance of the Spirit of Christ. He alone can guide us through the maze of lies and distortions, until we are delivered from this age, and the dominion of the Evil One.

Dr Neil Anderson has over 40 years experience helping individuals find victory over demonic harassment or even possession. You can find many of his videos on youtube.com. His teaching is very clear and powerful, explaining the steps to freedom. While I do not agree with his doctrinal views on every point, I can recommend his teaching on spiritual warfare.

Can Satan’s angels read our minds?
Answer: No. Only God can actually know our thoughts. You can speak to God from your mind, without speaking audibly. He will hear you. Satan is however, very good at “reading” people.
1 Chronicles 28:9 “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.” (NAS)
1 Kings 8:39 “then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know their hearts (for you alone know every human heart), (NIV)
Psalm 139:4 “Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.” (NIV)
