Elijah

Elijah

Where are great leaders like Elijah today? Uncompromisingly strong, yet self-controlled. Disciplined, yet forgiving. Audaciously courageous, yet kind. Heroic in the heat of battle, yet humble in the aftermath. We see a few such men and women, but the list is tragically short. Rarely does someone model these invaluable traits more obviously than God's mighty prophet Elijah, whose calling was anything but calm and free from conflict. Nevertheless, as you are about to discover in this book. Elijah exemplified true heroism and genuine humility amid the relentless pressure of battle. Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility is the fifth volume in the best-selling Great Lives from God's Word series by Charles Swindoll. The series also includes such powerful biographies as Joseph, David, Esther, and Moses. Exploring the depths of Elijah's fascinating life as a prophet of God, Swindoll does not gloss over his human weaknesses; rather, he presents an honest picture of this ordinary man who God transformed into His personal spokesman to confront idolatry and evil in the ancient world. You will find that it's a life worth emulating. In a world that has lost its way, due in part to the lack of balanced, godly leadership, we are more than ever in need of a few Elijah-like men and women who are not afraid to live courageously among their peers as they walk humbly with their God. "May this book establish deep within you a desire to stand strong for what is right as you bow low before Him who is worthy of your trust and obedience."-Charles Swindoll

twelve men

Twelve Ordinary Men

OK, name the 12 apostles. Chances are you can't. Disconcerting, no? These twelve, who most Christians think they know, took the teachings of Jesus and changed the world by establishing the Christian church.
They were chosen from among hundreds of "disciples" (meaning learners or students) of Jesus to be apostles: "messengers, sent ones". Who were they, why were they chosen, and why were they so successful?
It's important to consider who Jesus did NOT select for his inner circle. He chose no rabbi, no scholars, no one from the religious establishment who could have given him an inside track to power and authority. Instead, he picked a ragtag bunch of people who couldn't comprehend the power of God, struggled with their own sins, wrestled with the cost of commitment and too often, to put it plainly, could be quite dense as to what was going on.
Jesus taught them Scriptures and theology. He taught them how to pray, forgive, and serve one another with humility, gave them moral instruction, spoke to them of things to come, and used them to heal the sick and do other miracles. Three of them were given a brief glimpse of His glory on the Mount of Transfiguration.
In all, they had about 18 months of training and were then sent out on a mission too vast for any reasonable expectation of success.
This book examines everything known about these quite ordinary people who achieved the extraordinary. It's a fresh and delightful read.

All of the Womeni in the Bible

All of the Women in the Bible

All the women of the Bible offers a rich biographical perspective on every female figure in scripture -- including the famous, the little-known, and even the unnamed. In more than 300 engaging and insightful portraits, Edith Deen brings alive the saints and sorceresses, queens and servants, mothers and daughters, wives and widows whose profound influence is felt through-out the Bible. You can almost trace light and darkness in the Bible by the women themselves, she writes. Hannah, praying mother of Samuel, gave birth to a son who became the first great Hebrew prophet. And, of course, there was the mother of Jesus. On the other hand, Jezebel and Herodias were vile influences, the first bringing the judgment of God upon the northern kingdom of Israel. The second causing John the Baptist to be beheaded. Combining thorough detail with a lively and dramatic narrative, All of the Women of the Bible portrays the real women behind the Biblical stories and shows how, in their human struggles and triumphs, they are very much like the women of today. With each major biography identified by Bible chapter and verse and prefaced by a key passage of scripture, this is an ideal resources for teachers, Bible students, preachers, and writers, as well as anyone who wants to learn what it was really like to be a woman in Biblical times.

God's Outlaw

God's Outlaw: The Story of William Tyndale

Historical Overview:
Most Bible believers are familiar with the King James Version of the Bible as their main source when it comes to the scriptures. Some even would speak in old English in order to sound holy, using a lot of 'thee', 'thy' and 'thou' when they speak. However, little if any mention is ever made of William Tyndale (1494 - 1536).
Mr Tyndale was a scholar and translator, using Greek, Latin and Hebrew texts and dictionaries; he was the second person (after John Wycliffe and his associates, who used the Vulgate) to translate considerable portions of the Bible into English. He gained some of his inspiration from Martin Luther, who had translated the Bible into German.
The scholars, who eventually were responsible for the production of the King James Version of the Bible, relied heavily upon Tyndale's work.
Film Production:
This film takes you back in time. The music, costumes, buildings and backgrounds all ring of the 16th century. This film was carefully produced and the care and attention to details must be noted. At that time, it was illegal to recite portions of scripture in English, and to have a portion of the Bible in English in your possession was a serious crime. I am so glad that we live in a time and age where you can freely own and read a Bible... Thank God!
Strangely enough, there is only one scene where Tyndale is seen preaching to a small crowd, the focus is really on the translating and distribution efforts. Additionally, of interest is the maneuverings of the religious and state leaders of that day, as they tried to keep the English people in ignorance of God's Word.
Conclusion:
I thank God for Mr Tyndale's work, and I know that he has a martyr's crown for laying down his life for the Gospel's sake. This is a very significant part of Church history that must not be forgotten, I recommend this film, very strongly.

David - Divided heart

David - Divided Heart

Of all the figures in the Bible, David arguably stands out as the most perplexing and enigmatic. He was many things: a warrior who subdued Goliath and the Philistines; a king who united a nation; a poet who created beautiful, sensitive verse; a loyal servant of God who proposed the great Temple and founded the Messianic line; a schemer, deceiver, and adulterer who freely indulged his very human appetites.
David Wolpe, whom Newsweek called "the most influential rabbi in America," takes a fresh look at biblical David in an attempt to find coherence in his seemingly contradictory actions and impulses. The author questions why David holds such an exalted place in history and legend, and then proceeds to unravel his complex character based on information found in the book of Samuel and later literature. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of an exceptional human being who, despite his many flaws, was truly beloved by God.

Joseph

Joseph

The sets were historically accurate, and the filmmakers made sure to put detail into everything they did. They also left nothing out. Every little detail from the Joseph story is here, in their gruesome details. Ben Kingsley does an excellent job as Potiphar and Potiphars wife is equally good and vile. Joseph himself is everything you would expect Joseph to be, humble, handsome, smart, and spiritual. Wonderfully Done.
